Stavanger, Norway, August 25, 2025: Ace Well Technology, in collaboration with Expro and Archer, has successfully completed the first well deployment of the Ace Control Line Clamp (ACLC) using Expro’s Remote Clamp Installation System (RCIS) on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). This marks a significant milestone in the drive toward safer and more efficient well completion operations, by fully removing personnel from the red zone.

This pioneering operation represents a key advancement in automation within the completion phase, one of the most critical and personnel-intensive aspects of well construction. The integration of ACLC and RCIS eliminates the need for manual clamp installation in hazardous zones, significantly enhancing HSE outcomes while reducing red zone exposure.

“The ACLC was engineered with the objective of maintaining mechanical robustness while enabling remote installation under dynamic rig conditions. By leveraging our proven ratcheting mechanism, we’ve developed a clamp that delivers consistent holding force, precise alignment, and rapid installation - whilst significantly reducing red zone exposure. This first deployment confirms the system’s performance in real-world conditions and validates the design choices that underpin its functionality,” said Anbjørn Kaurstad, Technology Manager at Ace Well Technology.

The well installation was executed with Archer as the drilling contractor, who embraced the operation for its multiple benefits and operational consistency. Archer has also voiced strong support for the system’s continued deployment in future operations as part of a broader focus on automation and crew safety.

“We’re excited to join this breakthrough – handsfree completion enhances safety and efficiency by reducing manual risks and delivering more consistent results. Upholding strong QHSE standards is vital to every project, and this innovation helps us protect our team while improving the quality of our deliveries,” said Bjørn Christensen, One Archer Manager FLX.

The ACLC is built on Ace’s proven Ace Ratchet Collar (ARC) technology and was engineered to automate control line clamp installation. Its design helps eliminate red zone exposure, ultimately delivering measurable safety and efficiency improvements.

Operational Highlights from the First Well Deployment:

  • Achieved a peak running speed of 15–16 joints per hour

  • All clamps performed as designed with zero operational issues

  • Control lines remained securely fastened throughout the operation

  • Average time from make-up, clamp installation, and running in hole: ~50 seconds per joint

The ACLC solution was first initiated in 2020 at the request of Equinor, who sought to reduce red zone exposure during clamp installation. Ace Well Technology partnered with Expro to jointly develop an automated system. The collaboration combined Ace’s expertise in mechanical downhole solutions with Expro’s remote handling technology, culminating in the successful deployment of the ACLC with the RCIS system.
